Playing A Baseball Simulator Made Me A Fanatic Again

Playing A Baseball Simulator Made Me A Fanatic Again

When I was a kid, I loved baseball. I loved playing it, I loved watching it, and I really loved attending games. Some of my favorite memories of growing up in Miami came at the old Dolphins/Marlins stadium, a truly horrible place to watch any sporting event, but also one that was a mere 10-minute drive from my house. The heat was brutal, the concrete was ugly, and the sightlines were terrible. But I didn't care. I was there, and that was enough.

Then life got in the way. I moved away, the team changed, and my passion faded. I stopped following the season. I could not name the starting lineup. Baseball became a distant memory, something I used to do rather than something I did.

That changed recently when I picked up a baseball simulator. Not a flashy arcade game, but a deep, stat-heavy simulation that lets you manage a team, play out games, and track every single pitch. I expected to kill an hour. Instead, I lost a weekend.

The magic was not in the graphics. It was in the rhythm. The crack of the bat, the tension of a full count, the slow burn of a pitcher's duel. The game reminded me why I fell in love with the sport in the first place. It is not about home runs or highlight reels. It is about the small moments. The stolen base. The sacrifice bunt. The double play that kills a rally.

Now I am checking box scores again. I am arguing with friends about who should be the cleanup hitter. I am planning a trip back to Miami to see a game at the new park. A video game did not just entertain me. It woke up a part of me I had forgotten was there.
