For decades, buying a video game meant owning it. You could lend it to a friend, trade it, or sell it at a garage sale. But with digital video games, none of that is possible anymore. A recent decision by Sony has reignited the debate over what consumers actually own when they purchase a game online.
Kelowna gaming experts say the issue is more relevant than ever. Sony's move to remove purchased content from users' libraries without warning has left many players questioning their rights. "When you buy a digital game, you are really just buying a license to access it," says a local game store owner. "That license can be revoked at any time."
The distinction matters because physical copies give the buyer full control. You can resell a disc, give it away, or keep it for decades. Digital purchases, however, exist at the mercy of the platform holder. If servers go down or a company decides to pull a title, the game can vanish from your library with no compensation.
Some Kelowna gamers are now reconsidering their buying habits. One collector noted that he still buys physical copies for games he truly cares about. "I want to be able to hand my collection to my kids one day," he said. "You cannot do that with a digital file."
The industry shows no signs of reversing the digital trend. But as more consumers wake up to the limits of digital ownership, the conversation about what we really buy when we click "purchase" is only getting louder.
