A couple of weeks ago when id held a digital preview event showcasing the new DLC for DOOM: The Dark Ages, I was left a little bit unsure of how I would take to it. Director Hugo Martin promised that Revelations would be pushing the challenge of the game further than the base game, incorporating new enemy types and arena layouts that demand a faster, more aggressive playstyle. After spending a full weekend tearing through the expansion, I can confirm that the team delivered on that promise.
The story picks up right where the main campaign left off, with the Slayer facing a resurrected threat that feels both familiar and fresh. The narrative does not waste time with long cutscenes. It drops you into a series of hellish biomes that look stunning even by modern standards. The lighting effects and particle explosions during combat are a sight to behold, especially when you are juggling three different demons at once.
What makes Revelations stand out is the pacing. The base game had its share of intense firefights, but this DLC feels like a nonstop boss rush. Every room is designed to test your weapon switching and movement. The new heavy demon, the Wraith Knight, forces you to break your usual rhythm. It teleports behind cover and punishes players who rely on the same combo too often. I died more times in the first hour of Revelations than I did in the last three hours of the main game.
There is also a new weapon mod that turns the combat shotgun into a short-range flamethrower. It is not a game-changer, but it adds a nice option for crowd control. The soundtrack is as loud and aggressive as ever, with heavy guitar riffs that sync up with the action.
If you enjoyed the base game, this expansion is a must-play. It does not reinvent the wheel, but it sharpens the blade. Revelations is a worthy sendoff for this chapter of the Slayer's story.
