Mortal Kombat 2: Who Dies in Ending, Who Stars as Video Game Characters

The new "Mortal Kombat 2" movie brings back the bloody tournament and introduces a fresh wave of fighters from the video game series. The ending of the sequel makes some brutal choices about which characters survive and which ones meet a permanent fatality.

Among the major video game characters who die in the film's final act is Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban. The cocky Hollywood star gets his signature moment from the games when he delivers a finishing move to an opponent, but later falls in battle against a powerful enemy. Another notable death is that of Sonya Blade, portrayed by Jessica McNamee. Her character sacrifices herself in a fight against the villainous Shang Tsung, played by Chin Han, giving the other heroes a chance to escape.

On the survival side, Cole Young, the original character from the first movie, lives through the ending. Lewis Tan returns as Cole, and his arc concludes with him finally earning the dragon mark that makes him a true champion. Liu Kang, played by Ludi Lin, also survives and takes on a leadership role among the Earthrealm warriors. The fan-favorite character Scorpion, played by Hiroyuki Sanada, survives the final battle as well, setting up a potential return for a third film.

The movie introduces several new characters from the games. Karl Urban's Johnny Cage is a standout addition, bringing the character's wisecracking personality to life. Other new faces include Kitana, played by Adeline Rudolph, and Shao Kahn, played by Martyn Ford. The ending teases the arrival of even more fighters from the Mortal Kombat universe, leaving the door open for future sequels.

The sequel ends with a clear setup for a third movie, as the surviving characters prepare for a larger conflict against the forces of Outworld. Fans of the games will recognize several story beats pulled directly from the source material, including the classic tournament structure and the brutal finishing moves that define the series.
