The next two years are packed with video game movies, but not all of them are created equal. After spending hundreds of hours with the source material, here is how the upcoming slate stacks up, from the most promising to the ones that have me worried.
At the top sits the next chapter in the "Legend of Zelda" live-action saga. The team behind it has proven they understand the quiet, explorative heart of the games, and the casting rumors suggest a deep respect for the characters. This one feels like it could finally capture the magic of wandering Hyrule.
Right behind it is the "Ghost of Tsushima" film. The game is already cinematic, with a strong samurai story and a clear visual style. If the director can translate the game's tense standoffs and beautiful landscapes without losing the emotional weight, this could be a classic.
The "Until Dawn" movie lands in the middle. The game is a love letter to horror tropes, but turning a branching narrative into a single film is tricky. The cast is strong, but I worry it will lose the "choose your own adventure" feel that made the game special.
Near the bottom is the "Minecraft" movie. The game has no story, so the filmmakers are building one from scratch. Early looks show a lot of bright colors and blocky humor, which might work for kids, but it feels far from the quiet, creative survival that fans actually love.
Bringing up the rear is the "Street Fighter" reboot. The franchise has a terrible movie history, and early reports suggest a messy script. Without a clear focus on the tournament structure or the characters' rivalries, this one looks like it will miss the point entirely.
