A new studio is trying to flip the script on how big video games get made. Wolf Haus, founded by two industry veterans with deep roots in film and television, is building a large-scale narrative game called Join Us with a core team of just twelve people. The project, a darkly comedic cult simulator, aims to prove that a lean crew can deliver the scope usually reserved for studios with hundreds of developers.
The duo behind the company is drawing on an unusual mix of backgrounds. One co-founder comes from a family with a long history in Hollywood production, having worked on major studio sets. The other built a fortune in the legal cannabis industry before deciding to pour that capital into interactive entertainment. That funding allows the studio to avoid outside publishers and keep full creative control, a rare position in a market where most ambitious projects rely on external money.
Instead of hiring a massive workforce, Wolf Haus invested heavily in proprietary tools and procedural generation systems. The technology handles much of the busywork, like populating environments and managing character schedules, so the small team can focus on writing, directing, and tuning the experience. The result, according to the founders, is a game that feels handcrafted but has the density of a living world.
Join Us puts players in the role of a leader trying to build a self-sustaining community in a remote desert location. The game blends resource management with deep social simulation, as followers have their own personalities, doubts, and breaking points. The tone walks a fine line between satire and genuine psychological tension, drawing on the co-founders' knowledge of how real-world groups form and fracture.
The team says the twelve-person structure is not a limitation but a feature. Smaller groups communicate faster, make decisions without endless meetings, and maintain a single vision. They believe the industry has become bloated with unnecessary headcount, and their goal is to show that a focused team with the right tools can compete with the giants. The game is currently in an advanced stage of development, with a release window expected to be announced later this year.
