Classic Video Games Marking Three Decades Since Release in 2026

The year 2026 will see a fresh wave of video games hit the big 3-0, pulling a whole generation of players back to the mid-1990s. Among the titles turning 30 are some that launched entire franchises still running today, alongside a few cult classics that shaped how we play.

Leading the pack is "Super Mario 64," which redefined 3D platforming when it dropped for the Nintendo 64 in 1996. Its open-ended levels and analog stick control set a new standard. Also hitting the milestone is "Tomb Raider," the game that introduced Lara Croft to the world. It blended action, puzzle-solving, and exploration in a way that felt fresh and cinematic for its time.

On the PC side, "Diablo" from Blizzard Entertainment turns 30 in 2026. Its randomized dungeons and loot-driven gameplay created a template for action role-playing games that still influences titles today. "Resident Evil" also joins the list, launching the survival horror genre with its fixed camera angles, limited ammo, and creepy mansion setting. The series went on to become a cornerstone of Capcom's catalog.

Other notable birthdays include "Pokemon Red and Blue," which hit Japan in 1996 and sparked a global phenomenon that spans games, cards, and movies. "Crash Bandicoot" brought mascot platforming to the PlayStation with colorful levels and a spunky hero. "Quake" pushed first-person shooters into true 3D with its fast-paced multiplayer and mod-friendly engine. And "Command & Conquer: Red Alert" gave real-time strategy fans a campy alternate-history war.

These games not only defined their genres but also proved that the mid-90s were a golden era for innovation. For anyone who grew up with a CRT TV and a controller wired to the console, 2026 will feel like a reunion with old friends.
