SVG All-Stars: Stefan Richardson, Director, Global Broadcast, Riot Games

A five-time Emmy winner, Stefan Richardson has spent his career proving that live sports production is about much more than switching cameras or timing replays. As the Director of Global Broadcast at Riot Games, he has helped shape how millions of fans watch competitive gaming, and he believes the industry is only getting more complex and more exciting.

Richardson's path to esports was not a straight line. He cut his teeth in traditional sports broadcasting, where he learned the fundamentals of live television: anticipation, rhythm, and the ability to make split-second decisions under pressure. But when he moved into the world of gaming, he found a new set of challenges. The audience is younger, the action is faster, and the storytelling has to be sharper.

According to Richardson, the core of his job is not the technology, though that is impressive. It is the emotional connection with the viewer. He says that a broadcast has to make someone who has never played the game feel the tension of a final fight, and it has to make a veteran player see something new. That balance is hard to strike, but it is what separates a good show from a great one.

He also points out that the industry is shifting. Viewers are no longer sitting in front of a single screen for three hours. They are on their phones, on streaming platforms, and on social media at the same time. Richardson says the goal is to meet them where they are, not to force them into an old model. That means shorter highlights, more player-focused content, and a willingness to experiment with new formats.

For Richardson, the future of sports production is not about bigger sets or more graphics. It is about understanding the human moment. Whether it is a player's reaction after a win or the silence before a decisive play, the job is to capture that and share it with the world. And after two decades in the business, he still finds that challenge thrilling.
