The end of major updates for Destiny 2 follows a steady decline in player numbers and a strategic pivot by Bungie toward new projects. The studio confirmed that after the final expansion, "The Final Shape," and its subsequent episodes, the game will no longer receive new seasonal content or major expansions. Instead, Bungie will maintain the game in a "maintenance mode," offering only essential balance patches and bug fixes.
This decision marks a significant shift for the franchise that has defined Bungie for over a decade. The developer cited a need to allocate resources to new, unannounced games, including a reboot of the "Marathon" series and other original IPs. The move comes after a turbulent year for the studio, which saw layoffs, delays, and a reported drop in Destiny 2's concurrent player base by nearly 45% compared to its peak during the "Lightfall" expansion.
Bungie's leadership acknowledged that sustaining two major live-service titles simultaneously was not feasible. "Destiny 2 will continue as a living world, but we are turning our attention to what comes next," the studio stated. For the remaining player community, this means the end of annual story arcs and the seasonal model that has driven the game since 2020. The final content drop is expected later this year, after which the servers will remain online but without new narrative beats or activities.
