A major clue regarding the timeline for the next-generation Xbox console has emerged from an unlikely source: chipmaker AMD. During a recent technology conference, AMD's CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, made a notable statement about the company's semi-custom chip business, which historically powers both Xbox and PlayStation consoles.
Dr. Su indicated that AMD is expecting a significant surge in revenue from its semi-custom segment in 2026. Crucially, she followed this by stating, "And then 2027 will be a larger year." Industry analysts immediately connected these comments to the console development cycle, interpreting the 2026 ramp-up as the production phase for a new system launching the following year.
This strongly suggests that Microsoft's next Xbox console, currently referred to by many as the "next-gen" follow-up to the Xbox Series X|S, is targeting a 2027 release. The statement aligns with the traditional six-to-seven-year console generation cycle, positioning the potential launch roughly seven years after the Series X|S debuted in 2020.
While Microsoft has made no official announcement, the insight from its key silicon partner provides the clearest indication yet of the project's timeline. The news will undoubtedly fuel speculation about the hardware specifications and features Microsoft will prioritize for its next gaming platform.
