Video Game Coding Opens New Doors for Middle Schoolers on San Antonio's South Side

Video Game Coding Opens New Doors for Middle Schoolers on San Antonio's South Side

A program called Vision Coders is bringing video game coding classes to middle schools on San Antonio's South Side, giving students in underserved communities a chance to learn skills that could shape their futures. Created by the Intercultural Development Research Association, or IDRA, the initiative targets schools where access to technology education has been limited.

In these classrooms, students don't just play games. They build them. Using block-based coding platforms and introductory programming languages, sixth through eighth graders learn to design characters, create levels, and write logic that makes their games work. The goal is to spark interest in computer science early, before students decide it is not for them.

Teachers involved in the program say the hands-on approach keeps kids engaged. Instead of abstract math problems, students see immediate results on screen. If a character jumps when it should not, they troubleshoot the code. If a level is too easy, they adjust variables. It is problem solving wrapped in something fun.

IDRA chose San Antonio's South Side specifically because many families there lack access to after-school tech programs or summer coding camps. By bringing the classes directly into middle schools during the school day, the program removes barriers like transportation and cost. Organizers hope that by the time these students reach high school, they will already have a foundation in coding and a clearer idea of what careers in technology might look like.

The program is still young, but early feedback from students and teachers has been positive. Some kids who struggled in traditional math or science classes have found confidence in coding. Others have discovered they enjoy the creative side of game design. For a neighborhood where tech jobs often feel out of reach, Vision Coders is planting seeds.
