Researchers at New York University have developed a short video game that can be played on a smartphone and appears to be surprisingly effective at identifying signs of depression. The game, which takes only three minutes to complete, is not designed to be fun or entertaining. Instead, it focuses on how players interact with simple visual tasks.
The test works by measuring a person's "reward sensitivity" or how they react to positive and negative feedback. In the game, players must navigate a spaceship through a field of asteroids. Some asteroids are green and offer points for collecting them, while others are red and cause the player to lose points. The key is not just how many points a player scores, but how they adjust their behavior after hitting a red asteroid.
People with depression often show a blunted response to rewards and a heightened sensitivity to punishment. The game captures this by tracking subtle changes in reaction time and movement patterns after a player hits a red asteroid. Someone who is depressed might slow down significantly or become overly cautious, while a person without depression might quickly shake off the mistake and continue.
The NYU team tested the game on hundreds of participants and found that the behavioral data from the three-minute session matched up well with standard clinical questionnaires used to diagnose depression. The researchers believe this could lead to a new, low-cost screening tool that is less subjective than self-reporting. Because the game runs on a smartphone, it could be used in remote areas or by people who are hesitant to visit a mental health professional. The next step is to test the game in larger, more diverse populations to confirm its accuracy.
