The 10 Worst Video Games of All Time, Ranked

The history of video games is filled with triumphs, but it is also littered with catastrophic failures. While many games are simply mediocre, a select few have achieved legendary status for all the wrong reasons. These are the titles that broke promises, shattered expectations, and sometimes even broke the hardware they ran on. From baffling design choices to outright broken code, here are the ten worst video games of all time, ranked by their sheer audacity to fail.

Topping the list is "Superman 64." It is a masterclass in how to ruin a beloved superhero. Players are forced to fly through rings of green gas in a foggy, empty city. The controls are so unresponsive that simply moving forward feels like a chore. It is not a game; it is a punishment. Close behind is "Shaq Fu," a fighting game that inexplicably stars basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal. The combat is clunky, the story is nonsensical, and the character models look like they were drawn by someone who had only heard a description of a human.

Then there is "Bubsy 3D," a platformer that tried to cash in on the 3D craze of the late 1990s. The camera is a nightmare, the controls are slippery, and the levels are vast, empty spaces where you can easily fall to your death. Other infamous entries include "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" for the Atari 2600, a game so bad it was buried in a landfill. "Ride to Hell: Retribution" is a modern disaster, full of glitches, ugly graphics, and a story that feels like a bad parody of biker culture. "Action 52" for the NES promised 52 games but delivered 52 broken, unplayable messes. "Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing" is famous for having no opponent AI and letting you drive through solid objects. "The Guy Game" is a poorly made trivia title that is more infamous for its legal issues than its gameplay. "Custer's Revenge" is an Atari 2600 game that is not just bad but deeply offensive. Finally, "Plumbers Don't Wear Ties" is a bizarre "interactive movie" with terrible acting and a confusing plot, often cited as the worst game ever made for its sheer weirdness. These games serve as cautionary tales, reminding developers that a good idea means nothing without solid execution.
