Nintendo has confirmed that a top-ranked game from the 1990s is making its way to the upcoming Switch 2 console. The announcement, which arrived during a recent showcase, showed off a heavily updated version of the classic title. While many fans were excited to see the return of a beloved franchise, the reaction online has been far from unanimous.
The biggest point of debate centers on the game's visual overhaul. The original release featured a distinct, stylized art direction that many players still hold in high regard. The new footage, however, shows a move toward more realistic textures and lighting. "Hyper realism doesn't work well," said one video gamer about the new look. "The charm of the old game was in its cartoonish, colorful world. Now it just looks like every other modern action game."
Other fans echoed this sentiment, arguing that the shift in art style removes the personality that made the original stand out. Some pointed out that the gameplay mechanics also appear to have been streamlined, which could alienate longtime fans who enjoyed the original's complexity. On the other hand, a portion of the audience welcomed the changes, saying the old graphics have aged poorly and that a fresh coat of paint is necessary to attract new players.
Nintendo has not yet announced a release date for the Switch 2 version. The company is expected to share more details in the coming months, including whether the game will support cross-save or other modern features. For now, the debate continues, with fans divided between nostalgia and the desire for something new.
