This retro indie game rekindles the spirit of a James Bond classic

A new indie title is channeling the look and feel of a beloved James Bond classic from the Nintendo 64 era. The game, called SOE 64, wears its inspiration on its sleeve. It is a direct homage to the immersive first-person shooter Goldeneye 007, a game that defined multiplayer sessions for a generation of players.

SOE 64 is not a direct clone. Instead, it captures the specific spirit of that era. The developers have focused on recreating the slower, more deliberate pace of 90s shooters. There are no sprint mechanics, no aim-down-sights, and no regenerating health. Players must find body armor and health packs hidden in the levels. The controls are intentionally stiff, forcing you to commit to your shots and movements. The visual style uses low-polygon models and a limited color palette to mimic the hardware limitations of the Nintendo 64.

The game features a single-player campaign with a story about a secret agent infiltrating a rogue military base. The level design encourages exploration and finding alternative routes, much like the original Bond game. Multiplayer is also a core focus, with four-player split-screen support. It includes classic modes like deathmatch and a capture-the-flag variant. The developers have included a selection of unlockable cheats and character skins to further replicate that nostalgic experience.

For players who grew up with Goldeneye 007, SOE 64 offers a chance to revisit that specific gameplay feel without needing to dust off old hardware. It is a focused tribute to a time when shooters were about careful aim and map knowledge, not just fast reflexes.
