New data analysis reveals a surprising trend: a substantial number of reviews for major new Steam games are not written by customers who purchased directly on Valve's platform. For some high-profile, full-price titles, these "other" reviews—stemming from third-party key stores, retail copies, or promotional grants—can represent 30% to 45% of the total.
This phenomenon is particularly pronounced for expensive AAA releases, where discounts on reputable third-party key sites are a significant lure for consumers. While the median rate of off-Steam reviews across all successful games is around 12%, the percentage climbs sharply with a game's retail price. This indicates that for major publishers, a large volume of sales is occurring through channels that do not provide Valve with its standard platform revenue share.
The situation is different for breakout indie hits, which typically show a much lower percentage of off-platform reviews. These games, often with lower price points and less pre-order buzz, appear to engage less with the third-party key marketplace. Analysts suggest that while indie developers could see a small sales uplift from strategically using key stores, the logistical complexity can be a barrier for smaller teams.
This trend underscores a complex ecosystem where player acquisition and platform economics increasingly extend beyond Steam's own storefront. The data suggests that for certain types of games, a player's journey to ownership frequently begins—and ends—elsewhere, even if their final review lands on Steam.
