This summer marks the 30th anniversary of the Nintendo 64, a console that arrived in 1996 with a strange three-pronged controller and a promise to bring players into a new dimension. It delivered. While the system had a relatively small library compared to its rivals, its best titles were revolutionary. Here are five games that did more than just sell copies -- they changed how we play.
First is "Super Mario 64." It was the launch title that taught an entire generation how to navigate a 3D space. The analog stick let players control Mario with a fluidity that felt like magic. The game set the blueprint for every 3D platformer that followed, from camera angles to level design.
Next is "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time." Many still call it the greatest game ever made. It took the open-world exploration of the 2D Zelda games and translated it perfectly into three dimensions. The lock-on targeting system it introduced became a standard for action games, and its time-travel story remains deeply moving.
"GoldenEye 007" proved that first-person shooters could work on a console. Before this, the genre belonged to PC mice and keyboards. Rare's masterpiece offered split-screen multiplayer that kept friends glued to a single TV for hours. It also featured stealth elements and mission objectives that went beyond simple run-and-gun action.
"Super Smash Bros." started as a quirky experiment and became a fighting game giant. It tossed out health bars and complex combos in favor of simple knockback mechanics and chaotic four-player brawls. The game's roster of Nintendo all-stars turned every match into a fan-service dream.
Finally, "Banjo-Kazooie" took the collect-a-thon formula from "Super Mario 64" and perfected it. The game was packed with personality, clever puzzles, and a world that felt alive. It set a high bar for humor and exploration in 3D platformers that few games have matched since.
The N64 may look primitive today, but these five titles laid the foundation for modern gaming. They taught developers how to think in three dimensions, how to design for a controller, and how to build worlds that players never wanted to leave.
