One of my favorite games growing up was “Super Mario Galaxy.” I loved flying around the colorful planets, collecting Power Stars, and listening to the sweeping orchestral score. That sense of wonder and nostalgia is exactly what the newest Mario film aims to capture. The movie, which hit theaters this past weekend, is a love letter to the franchise’s most devoted followers, packing in references, characters, and settings that span decades of gaming history.
From the opening scene, it’s clear that the filmmakers prioritized fan service. The story weaves together elements from classic titles like “Super Mario Bros. 3” and “Super Mario 64,” while also incorporating deeper cuts such as the spooky Boo Mansion from “Luigi’s Mansion” and the gravity-defying levels of “Super Mario Galaxy.” Longtime players will spot familiar power-ups, hidden warp pipes, and even cameo appearances from lesser-known characters like Rosalina and the Lumas. The animation style is vibrant and faithful to the games, with meticulous attention to detail in every pixel of the Mushroom Kingdom.
However, the film does not neglect newcomers. The plot is straightforward: Mario and Luigi must rescue Princess Peach from Bowser’s latest scheme. The humor is broad and accessible, with slapstick gags and lighthearted banter that will entertain children and adults alike. But the true magic lies in the Easter eggs and callbacks that reward those who have spent years exploring the games. For fans who grew up with the plumber brothers, this movie feels like a celebration of their shared history. It is a reminder of why they fell in love with the franchise in the first place.
