A new survey reveals that Polish teenagers are pouring significant amounts of money into video game features that resemble gambling. According to the research, young people aged 14 to 18 may collectively spend up to 94 million euros on in-game items like loot boxes and random reward packs in 2024.
The study, conducted by a Polish research institute, found that 37% of teens in that age group have paid for such features. Loot boxes are virtual containers that players buy with real money, but the contents are random. This has drawn criticism from regulators and child safety groups, who argue the mechanics mimic slot machines or roulette.
The average teen spender in Poland reportedly spends around 45 euros per month on these microtransactions. However, a small group of heavy spenders drives the total figure much higher. The report warns that the combination of bright colors, sound effects, and the "just one more try" loop can lead to compulsive behavior.
Poland is not alone in facing this issue. Several European countries, including Belgium and the Netherlands, have already classified some loot boxes as illegal gambling. The Polish government is now under pressure to consider similar regulations. Critics say that without clear rules, game companies will continue to profit from children who do not fully understand the odds. The survey also noted that many teens hide these purchases from their parents, making it harder for families to track the spending.
