Sony’s revised digital rights management (DRM) policy for PlayStation consoles has sparked concern among gamers, as a newly discovered clause suggests that players may need to verify their game licenses on a monthly basis. The policy, which applies to both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 titles, requires users to maintain an active internet connection and refresh their licenses every 30 days to continue playing purchased digital games.
The change came to light when users noticed updated terms of service that include a “license refresh” requirement. Under this system, if a player fails to connect to the PlayStation Network within a 30-day window, their digital library could become inaccessible until the licenses are revalidated. This has raised alarms for those with unreliable internet connections, as well as for collectors who prefer to keep older consoles offline.
Critics argue that the policy undermines the concept of game ownership, effectively turning purchased titles into rental content that depends on Sony’s continued server support. While physical disc owners are not affected, digital-only gamers—especially those using the discless PS5 Digital Edition—face the most risk. Sony has not officially commented on the backlash, but the move appears to be an effort to combat account sharing and unauthorized access. For now, players are advised to ensure their consoles connect to the internet at least once a month to avoid losing access to their libraries.
