How Don't Lose Aggro Reimagines MMO Tanking as a Solo Roguelite

How Don't Lose Aggro Reimagines MMO Tanking as a Solo Roguelite

A solo developer is taking one of the most thankless jobs in online gaming and turning it into a standalone roguelite experience. Don't Lose Aggro, currently in development, reimagines the tank role from massively multiplayer games as a single-player tactical puzzle, where the goal is not just surviving but holding enemy attention through careful positioning and resource management.

The core problem the developer wanted to solve was readability. In most MMOs, threat is a hidden number, and tanks rely on addons or guesswork to know if they have control of a fight. Don't Lose Aggro makes threat visible and physical. Enemies are drawn to you based on clear, telegraphed actions, and your abilities shift their focus in obvious ways. The game strips away the opaque math and replaces it with a system that feels like a rhythm game crossed with a chess match.

Since there is no party to protect, the game introduces AI companions that follow simple commands. They will attack, retreat, or hold position, but they will also take damage if you fail to intercept incoming attacks. This creates a constant tension between dealing with the immediate threat and keeping your allies safe, which mirrors the real responsibility of a tank without requiring a group of human players.

The developer also focused on making the role approachable. Tanking is often seen as stressful and demanding, with a steep learning curve and harsh social consequences for failure. By removing the multiplayer pressure, Don't Lose Aggro lets players experiment, fail, and learn at their own pace. Runs are short, deaths are cheap, and each attempt teaches you something new about enemy patterns or your own toolkit.

The result is a game that treats tanking not as a chore but as a puzzle worth solving. It takes a niche mechanic and gives it room to breathe, proving that even the most overlooked roles can carry an entire game when designed with care.
