For years, my approach to video games was transactional. I viewed them not as worlds to explore, but as checklists to complete. My entire focus was laser-targeted on the next achievement notification, the next cosmetic unlock, or the next item on the progression track. The game itself became secondary to the extrinsic rewards it dangled before me. Play sessions felt like work, driven by a compulsive need to see numbers go up and bars fill, rather than any genuine sense of fun or wonder.
The turning point came during a sprawling open-world game. I was meticulously clearing icons from the map, my eyes glued to a guide, when I suddenly stopped. I realized I had no memory of the story, the characters, or the landscape I had just mechanically traversed. I was playing wrong. I decided to start a new game with one rule: no guides, no achievement hunting, just immersion.
The change was profound. I noticed intricate environmental details, engaged with side characters I would have previously ignored, and found joy in simply existing within these digital spaces. The pressure vanished, replaced by authentic curiosity. I learned that the true reward was never the virtual trophy at the end, but the experience itself—the stories lived, the challenges overcome for personal satisfaction, and the pure, unadulterated fun of play. By abandoning the grind, I finally discovered the game.
